Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors
The CAGC is a national professional association in Canada whose vision is that genetic counsellors are trusted leaders in genetic and genomic care, and whose mission is to strengthen the genetic counselling profession by providing its members with education, community, support and leadership.
Founded in 1990, the CAGC was established to promote high standards of practice, support professional growth and increase public awareness of genetic counselling in Canada.
Genetic counsellors are healthcare professionals with specialized training who work with individuals and families to assess genetic risks, interpret genetic information, guide medical and personal decisions, provide counselling, and serve as educators, advocates and resources within the healthcare team — and increasingly in non-traditional roles in administration, research, consulting and private health institutions.
The CAGC’s membership is open to genetic counsellors, students, allied health professionals in genetics, and even clinical and laboratory geneticists, while the association also maintains a Code of Ethics and a Code of Professional Conduct to guide the ethical and professional responsibilities of its members.
