Making the complex feel simpler: supporting COMP’s next digital chapter

Medical physics is highly technical work. Supporting the people who do it shouldn’t require equally complicated administration.

The Canadian Organization of Medical Physicists (COMP) is the main professional body for medical physicists practising in Canada. Its community includes physicists, scientists, academics, students and fellows working across hospitals, cancer centres, universities and research facilities. COMP helps advance medical physics while supporting professional development, education, research and excellence in patient care.

For an organization serving a specialized national community, the digital experience matters. Members need to find what they need. Administrators need systems they can understand and manage. And the website needs to make sense to someone arriving for the first time.

Improving behind the scenes Processes

Our recent work with COMP started with a review of its membership database and CRM environment.

Over time, systems naturally accumulate customizations, processes and data structures. Some remain useful. Others simply reflect how things used to be done.

The goal was to separate the two.

Together, we developed a strategy for simplifying COMP’s membership administration, increasing opportunities for member self-service and making better use of the tools already available within the Members Village software.

We also reviewed the website’s user interface and information architecture, looking for ways to make the experience clearer for both members and public visitors. Because sometimes the most useful improvement isn’t adding another feature. It’s removing a decision, shortening a path or making the next step more obvious.

A simpler foundation for the work ahead

Behind the scenes, Members Village helped update COMP’s membership environment by replacing older customizations with more maintainable functionality, removing data structures that were no longer needed and introducing new ones where they could make administration or the member experience easier.

COMP administrators also received personalized training so the people managing the platform understand not only what has changed, but how to use it confidently.

The result is a simpler foundation designed around the way COMP works today, and one that can continue to evolve with the organization.

The tools for the task

The work combined membership management, CRM access, website architecture and ongoing strategic support to simplify how COMP manages information and how members interact with the organization. Each tool was considered as part of a connected system, with the goal of increasing self-service and making the overall digital experience easier to navigate.

Membership Management

Member information should support the work, not create more of it. Simplifying COMP’s membership structure makes routine administration easier while creating more opportunities for members to manage information themselves.

Non-Dues Revenue

COMP’s career centre creates an opportunity to provide real value to the medical physics community while generating revenue beyond membership dues. Employers and recruiters can purchase and manage job postings through a self-serve process, while COMP controls pricing, posting duration and access.

Website and Architecture

A professional community needs a digital home that is easy to navigate. Reviewing COMP’s website structure and interface helped identify ways to make information easier to find and journeys more intuitive for members and other visitors.

Strategy and Support

Technology keeps changing, and so do organizations. Regular strategic reviews and ongoing development support give COMP an opportunity to revisit priorities, address emerging needs and keep the platform aligned with the work it exists to support.

Processing...

Let's make the complicated parts simpler.

Operations tend to get more complicated over time. New processes are added, old ones remain, and before long the system can start shaping the work instead of supporting it.

Members Village helps associations take a closer look at their membership systems, websites and day-to-day workflows to find opportunities to simplify.

Tell us a little about your organization and what you’d like to improve. We’ll explore whether Members Village is the right fit for the work ahead—without adding more complexity to the conversation.
